Rihanna’s Awe-Inspiring Trip To Malawi

IMG_0703Rihanna is making an effort to improve the education system in poor countries.

Rihanna traveled to Malawi, a small country in East Africa which is one of the poorest countries in the world, to promote education. She went to Muzu Primary School to speak and work with educators and students. Rihanna and her foundation traveled to the country with Global Citizens and the Global Partnership for Education in January 2017.

Rihanna’s anti-poverty organization, the Clara Lionel Foundation, partnered with the aforementioned group to advocate for strong education systems so that even the poorest students in the world can get a quality education. The documentary recording Rihanna’s work in Malaw shows that the schools lack resources such as books and chalk to write on the blackboard. The lack of classrooms compels some students must then to learn outside under the shade of a tree.

In an interview included in the documentary, 14-year-old Wongani Nyirend stated that learning under the tree is not ideal, especially in rainy weather. The video discusses food scarcity, young girls’ child marriages, and the dangers girls face when traveling to school.

In the video, Rihanna can be seen singing with the students and teaching them mathematics. The artist stated in the video that she wanted to personally see what was happening in Malawi as opposed to just hearing and reading statistics. She  also said the trip gave the opportunity to see the students’ learning conditions  so that she can take the best approach when moving forward with her efforts to improve the system.
