We Love Lana Del Rey’s Lust For Life

Lana Del Rey released her latest music video this week featuring The Weeknd.  The video starts the usual “Lana” way: she sings to her audience with a melodramatic, doe-like stare as if she were a suburban Nancy Sinatra. Lana leaves the set of her music video to meet The Weeknd on the “H” of the Hollywood Sign. There, the two embrace like teenage sweethearts. Lana jumps from letter to letter, kicks off her red Mary Jane shoes, and looks happier than her fans have grown to know.  The video ends with Lana Del Rey and The Weeknd lying beside one another in a field of flowers, the camera panning out to show us a peaceful planet Earth.

Lana Del Rey, in past years, has presented herself as a lost cause, stating that she’d wish she could die young. In photoshoots and videos, she would withhold her smile. A female refusing to smile can be a truly powerful thing in this society where the patriarchy demands us to show our pearly whites. However, with Lana’s new releases, we can tell she’s entered a new feminine energy. “They say only the good die young / that just ain’t right.” Whether this is the new Lana Del Rey, entering happier times and self-acceptance, or if she’s just smiling for her fans, one thing is for sure…we are LOVING it.
