The Notre Dame Walkout

This past Sunday, students walked out of their own commencement graduation at the University of Notre Dame.

Why? There was a certain, unpopular guest who happened to be the speaker this year: Vice President, Mike Pence. According to NY Times, more than several dozens of students exited the ceremony as Pence was delivering his speech. Many students displayed signs of protests by wearing LGBT flags and ribbons on their gowns and caps.

Buzzfeed reported that the walkout was preplanned, as they did not support the policies of the vice president. There are a multitude of videos online that show the walkout, displaying students who began their walkout along with others in solidarity while others remained seated throughout. It’s no wonder why such a protest happened, as students did not want a speaker who directly opposes everything that they are and truly stand for. Although it was saddening to have something like this happening in what should be a day of celebration for graduating students, it was an eye opening moment for the future generation of students who will, no doubt, be inspired.
