You’ve probably heard his name in the past month or so.

He’s been on Riverdale and that little show on Netflix called 13 Reasons Why. His name is Ross Butler, the up and coming Asian American actor, who has been slowly making his way through the acting industry.

Since he started working for major networks, he’s been actively acting for roles that aren’t strictly depicted as Asian. His mission is to help carve out a road for other Asian American actors and actresses who are finding their own respective voices in Hollywood.

Ross Butler doesn’t want to play your stereotypical nerd. In fact, he’s never even fit that kind of stereotype since he’s always had a naturally athletic build and stands more than six feet tall. When he auditioned for Riverdale, he was going out for a role with a character description of “an American jock.” This meant that, with his nationality, he could expand that role further.  He played Reggie, a teen and a jock, a character that happened to be Chinese.

In the long run, Ross Butler hopes to the kind of actor that can help extend the conversation of Hollywood diversity further. And with his most recent role as Zach Dempsey in 13 Reasons Why, it looks as if he is going to achieve some big things in the future.
