Back to School with Ivy Westfall

Spoiler alert: When The Revolution of Ivy begins, Ivy Westfall is alone and beyond the fence. So her back-to-school list would be a little different from the average teenager’s. She doesn’t have much use for a cell phone or skinny jeans. Even if she was living in today’s age, those things wouldn’t be important to Ivy. It’s not who she is or who she’ll ever be. She needs the basics, and she needs them fast. Ivy may not be in school, but she’s learning every day–how to be strong and independent and true to herself.

—A canteen. You know, for water….Ivy doesn’t even know what Starbucks is, so her drink of choice at this point would definitely be water. And the more the better, so a canteen would come in handy.

—A weapon. Right now, Ivy is pretty defenseless if she should happen to encounter an unfriendly animal or human. Any sort of weapon would be a welcome addition to her back-to-school stash. You couldn’t get away with it at school, but Ivy needs it for survival and out in the wilderness any survival help is welcomed.

—A winter coat. The weather is still warm, but fall is just around the corner and Ivy’s going to freeze if she doesn’t find some warmer clothes. It doesn’t have to be fashionable. She’s not walking the catwalk anytime soon, but she does need to be warm and cozy.

—A best girlfriend. Ivy’s never really had a close girlfriend. There was her sister, Callie, but she was more foe than friend. And then there was Bishop, who was Ivy’s best friend as well as the boy she loved. But she hasn’t experienced having a best girlfriend to talk to, have some fun with, and trust. You know the one that will stay with you for life? The one who knows every dirty secret you’ll ever have? Ivy doesn’t have that yet, and she yearns for it. Don’t we all?

—Bishop. Let’s face it, Ivy misses Bishop like crazy. Everything beyond the fence would be easier if Bishop was by her side. They’re a perfect team. Like Bonnie and Clyde. Like Peanut Butter and Jelly. They somehow always end up together and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Amy Engel author photo

Amy was born in Kansas and after a childhood spent bouncing between countries (Iran, Taiwan) and states (Kansas, California, Missouri, Washington, D.C.), she settled in Kansas City, Missouri where she lives with her husband and two kids.  Before devoting myself full time to motherhood and writing, she was a criminal defense attorney, which is not quite as exciting as it looks on TV.  When she has a free moment, she can usually be found reading, running, or shoe shopping.
