We love asking questions and we love the answers from some of our favorite authors. Today we’re talking to Lisa Basso, author of A Matter of Time (June 9, 2015; Month9Books).  Thank you for talking to us today, Lisa! We’re honored!

A Matter of Time

GLITTER: For those who haven’t read your book yet, how would you describe A Matter of Time?

LISA: A Matter of Time is the third and final book in The Angel Sight series. The book is a dark, emotionally turbulent ride brimming with action, romance, and difficult choices.

GLITTER: Did you always want to be an author? Did you ever feel like giving up? Did you receive rejection letters in the beginning? How did you get over them?

LISA: I never knew what I wanted to do. I worked as a kind of Jack of all trades before I remembered how happy writing used to make me and decided to finish that first story I started writing when I was twelve. I’ve been writing full-time since.

I’ve received probably over a hundred rejection letters. I know I’m not done seeing them. Rejection stings, yes, but it is part of the business. To shake off the pain from a rejection, I suggest stepping out of head. Go out with friends, see a movie, eat junk food, basically do something fun to get your mind off it. When you come back to face the music, keep the happy times in mind and look ahead to the future. I’ve felt like giving up, so many times, but I never have. That’s always my biggest nugget of advice: if writing is what you love, never give up. If this book isn’t your one, maybe the next will be. Always keep pushing forward.

GLITTER: Do you mostly write paranormal or would you write contemporary as well?

LISA: My love for fantasy and sci-fi will most likely keep me busy for quite a while. That said, I do have a YA contemporary in mind. I’d love to be able to work on that in the next year or two. I like to keep my options open, but I’m a never say never kind of girl.

GLITTER: Do you have any crazy writing rituals? One thing you can’t write without?

LISA: I like to shake things up with every book I write. I let the muse do what she likes—until the day all she wants to do is watch TV on the couch, then I take the reins back. I create Pandora stations for each book and use them every morning when I sit down to write to help me sink into the characters and setting. I also listen to the station when I’m in the shower or doing chores around the house. It helps keep my mind in the world I’ve created.

GLITTER: Favorite video game?

LISA: This is an unfair question. As a rule, I try not to have one favorite of anything. Right now I’m enjoying Dying Light (a really cool take on a zombie shooter) and the Borderlands series (a post-apocalyptic Mad Max style action adventure game). I’m really looking forward to two upcoming titles: LEGO Jurassic Park and Dead Island 2 (which keeps being pushed back *grrr*).

GLITTER: What are you currently working on?

LISA: I’m currently working on a first draft of a YA sci-fi that I’m beyond excited about. It’s my first attempt at sci-fi, so there’s a pretty steep learning curve, but the world I’m beginning to create and the plot that’s starting to unfold is so different from anything I’ve written before. First drafting is one of my favorite parts of writing, so I’m enjoying moving forward a little bit every day. Since it is in such an early stage, I can’t really say much more than that, other than I hope you all get to read it sometime soon.

Lisa M. Basso was born and raised in San Francisco, California. She is a lover of books, video games, animals, and baking (not baking with animals though). As a child she would crawl into worlds of her own creation and get lost for hours. Her love for YA fiction started with a simple school reading assignment: S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. When not reading or writing she can usually be found at home with The Best Boyfriend that Ever Lived ™ and her two darling (and sometimes evil) cats, Kitties A and B.
