ANDREA MASSEY DISHES ON SUMMER CAMPS

With summer inching closer as we speak, Glitter recently sat down with Andrea Massey, social media manager for Pali Adventures, a residential one and two week specialty summer camp in Southern California, to find out what you need to do to prepare for summer camp.  She has some amazing tips so read on to find out more and make sure to follow them on Instagram @pali_adventures, or on Twitter at @Pali_Camp.

Pali - Extreme Action Camp

GLITTER: What advice do you have for teens to help them pick the perfect summer camp?

ANDREA: Choose a camp that matches your interests. There really is a camp out there for everything, so it’s totally possible to find one that you’ll really love (not just one your parents want you to go to J). You can ask around your group of friends to see if they have any recommendations for you, but you don’t need to go with friends in order to have a great time.  Another thing to think about is what you would prefer – the relaxation of an all-girls camp, or the excitement of a co-ed camp.

GLITTER: Do they need to do anything to prepare for summer camp?

ANDREA: Other than packing? Nope! Camp is all about coming as you are, and feeling free to be yourself. Get ready to experience something totally different than school – a place where no one will be judging you, pressuring you, or bullying you.  Girls love camp as a way to escape all the drama of school and life. And as far as packing – the main things you’ll need are sunscreen, a hat, chapstick, any silly/fun/bright clothes and accessories you have, tennis shoes, a swimsuit, and comfy clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

GLITTER: Can you explain each type of summer camp? Where are they located?

ANDREA: Pali Adventures is actually just one big camp, in one location: Running Springs in the beautiful mountains of Southern California. All of our programs (morning specialties) take place on our 74-acre camp.  The only exception is Watersports, where the campers have a short drive out to Big Bear Lake every morning. So you choose one program to focus on all week, but you only spend the mornings in it. There are 21 incredible specialties. A few of our most popular are Hollywood Stunts, Movie Makeup, Flying Trapeze, and Rockstar (where you get to perform songs for the whole camp!). You can check out the full list of specialties and find out more about them on our website.

GLITTER: How long are the summer camps?

ANDREA: Pali is really flexible in that you can stay for as short as just one week, or as long as all summer. You could even stay all 9 weeks, do a different specialty each time, and still not have time to try all the awesome things to do here.  Or you could spend all summer just learning Flying Trapeze – it’s up to you. You can also start out with just one week and see if you like it. Most campers who start with one week end up begging their parents to let them stay longer next time. 🙂

GLITTER: What kind of activities do the teens participate in?

ANDREA: Teens get to participate in only their favorite activities. After morning specialties are over, the afternoon is full of free-choice electives. You get to choose all your own activities from over 70 options! Some of our camper’s favorites are ziplines, ropes course, watersports, bungee trampoline, paintball, and driving ATV quads! But you could also choose more low-key options, like our very popular teen lounge, manicures and pedicures, or making your own friendship bracelets.

GLITTER: What makes Pali Adventures different from other summer camps?

ANDREA: Pali is different from anything other summer camp because you get to totally customize your experience.  You won’t have to do any activities that you don’t want to do. The hardest part will be choosing since you can’t do it all! Your day can be completely different from everyone else’s, since you choose your favorite things to do. The most amazing and fun activities on the planet, plus a really friendly and safe atmosphere means you’ll also meet awesome new friends for life.

GLITTER: What are your goals for Pali Adventures for 2015?

ANDREA: 2015 is going to be our biggest year yet. We are adding three new specialties (LARP/D&D, Magic and Fine Arts) and lots of new activities. We also have a brand new dining hall and cabins to make room for even more campers, as we continue to grow. But as always, our main goal is that every camper who visits us in 2015 has a crazy-fun time, makes friends, learns something new, and comes away saying, “That was the best camp ever!”
