CELEBRITY

INTERVIEW WITH MARCUS SCRIBNER

Marcus Scribner plays Andre Jr. on the new ABC hit show, Black-ish.  Marcus  recently sat down with Glitter Magazine to talk about the show, his favorite part about acting, if he ever gets nervous in front of a camera, and what it’s like being nominated for a  NAACP Image Award up against four amazing adult actors. This fantastic actor also has some sound advice for helping teens follow their dreams.

MARCUS SCRIBNER

GLITTER: Tell us about your new show, Black-ish. What character do you play?

MARCUS: The show is about an upper-to-middle-class African-American family dealing with the troubles of modern society. The Johnsons go through many crazy and hilarious experiences that people can relate to. I play Andre Jr., but most of the time on the show they call me just Junior.

GLITTER: What’s your favorite part about acting?

MARCUS: Well, when I first started acting, it was to help me overcome being shy. Over time it helped to build my self-confidence. So I would have to say the best part of acting would be how self-confident it has made me. I also REALLY like improv.

GLITTER: What’s been one of your favorite roles to play so far?
MARCUS: My favorite role to play has to be Andre Jr. I can really relate to the character and really enjoy playing him.

GLITTER: Do you ever get nervous being in front of a camera?

MARCUS: In the beginning, yes, but the more and more I’m in front of the cameras, I’ve gotten really comfortable and confident and am not so nervous anymore. It’s become second nature to me.

GLITTER: How do you prepare yourself before filming an episode?

MARCUS: I usually take a moment to think to myself how Andre Jr. would act in certain situations. I approach each episode ready to face obstacles as Andre Jr.

GLITTER: How did you feel being nominated for a NAACP Image Award, up against four adult actors?

MARCUS: First of all just being nominated for an NAACP Image Award in itself was just overwhelming to me. To have my name connected to the NAACP is an honor that I don’t take lightly. When I heard I was nominated with the other four actors of such high caliber was a moment I will never forget. And then to be the youngest in this category is just unbelievable.  Just to be associated in the same category as Laurence Fishburne who plays my grandfather on Black-ish is just so humbling.

GLITTER: Favorite sport?

MARCUS: I would have to say basketball is my favorite sport.  I’d like to play some day one-on-one with Kobe Bryant.

GLITTER: Would you like to be a journalist when you’re older?

MARCUS: Yes, I would like to be a journalist when I get older.  I think it would really be great to be the type of field journalist who brings news to the people. I feel like news is the most important source that you can learn from and it would be awesome to be able to provide that to people as a career. But acting would definitely be my top career choice.

GLITTER: Most outrageous thing a fan has ever done?

MARCUS: So far most of the fans that I’ve met or even spoken to on Twitter have been very respectful. I haven’t encountered anything too outrageous.

GLITTER: What’s playing in your iPod right now?

MARCUS: Mark Ronson – “Uptown Funk” feat. Bruno Mars.

GLITTER: What other upcoming projects do you have planned?
MARCUS: There are a couple of really great projects I’m looking right now that I hope I can announce once all the scheduling is worked out.

GLITTER: Last movie you saw in the theaters?

MARCUS: The last movie that I saw in theaters was the Hunger Games Mockingjay: Part 1. I thought it was a great movie.

GLITTER: Surf baby or snow kid?

MARCUS: I’m definitely a surf baby because I love my native California sunshine.

GLITTER: What advice do you have to give to teens to help them follow their dreams?

MARCUS: I think that you should always stay true to yourself and do what you believe in because that will most likely lead you to your ultimate goal. I also think that it’s important to never give up because dedication is needed to succeed.
