We love asking questions and we love the answers from some of our favorite authors. Today we’re talking to Becca Fitzpatrick, author of Black Ice (Oct. 7, 2014; Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers).  Thank you for talking to us today, Becca! We’re honored!

GLITTER: Black Ice is different from your other work. What was it like to pen a stand-alone thriller?

BECCA: It was a fun challenge! The need to wrap up a plot in one book is a major difference between a standalone and a four-book series. It’s nice not to have a cliffhanger every once and awhile!

GLITTER: Is it true that inspiration for this book came from your teenage years?

BECCA: The specific events—the kidnapping and being trapped during a snowstorm with fugitives—are totally made up. But the emotional truth I pulled from my own teenage fears of being put in a situation where I was separated from my family and left to fend for myself. My heroine in Black Ice, Britt, faces a lot more challenges than I ever did. Thank goodness for that!

GLITTER: Do you love to create complex characters?

BECCA: Really getting to know my characters is one of the best parts of writing. I love trying to understand how different characters—and people—would react to extreme circumstances.

GLITTER: What do you hope readers will get out of reading Black Ice?

BECCA: I hope they will be entertained! And if it sparks some conversation, I’d love that, too.

GLITTER: Did you always want to be an author? Did you ever feel like giving up? Did you receive rejection letters in the beginning? How did you get over them?

BECCA: I’ve been so blessed in my experience as an author. I started writing YA as an adult—my husband gifted me with a creative writing class. The book I worked on in that class was an early draft of HUSH, HUSH. But even published authors have to face rejection—after your book comes out, there are critics and reviewers who are going to have opinions, and you might not like them all. I try to focus on the fun I have while I’m writing, and the lovely support I get from my fans. You can’t please everyone!

GLITTER: Do you hope that your books will one day be turned into a movie or on TV?

BECCA: It would be a thrill to see any of my books on the big or small screen.

GLITTER: Do you have any crazy writing rituals?

BECCA: Not really!

GLITTER: What are you working on now?

BECCA: I’m finishing up edits on my next standalone teen thriller, SAPPHIRE SKIES, about a girl who is stuck in a sleepy town in Nebraska because she’s in the Witness Protection Program. She witnessed a brutal crime, and is awaiting the trial so she can testify. Unfortunately, the drug dealer she will be testifying against is looking to silence her for good before the trial, so, even though she’s starting to really love being in Thunder Basin, Nebraska, she’s always looking over her shoulder.
