Lauren McDonald, Founder of The Thank You Factor, talks about giving thanks!

Happy 2015 Glitter Girls!

It’s a new year. You’re back to school + the holidays are over. Spring break seems like it is a million days away.

Here’s the big question: Did you write thank you notes for your gifts this year? And by notes, I’m not suggesting emails or maybe a text. I’m talking about the ones with some killer stationery. You know the ones you write with a pen?

Let me break this down for you. Your manners help to define the girl that you are. The kind and thoughtful girl, well, she sends handwritten thank you notes. The good news is that it’s not too late.

Do you know what comes in January? Bills. When your Grandma opens her mailbox and finds a bright, happy envelope with your handwriting on it, don’t you think it will make her day?

Right after you read this, sit down and think about who sent you gifts this past year.  Parents, grandparents, your aunts and uncles, the family you babysit for, your best friend, her parents…the list goes on.  Maybe if you journal, you could write about how it feels to express gratitude.

Girls who write handwritten thank you notes are memorable. Emails and texts, they get deleted. Cards are kept and remembered.

Get this. In the UK there was a survey. They asked 2,000 about handwritten thank you notes. Over half the people said that if they didn’t receive a handwritten note for a gift they gave, they would reduce the amount they spent the next time on a gift for that person. Ouch. Here’s the big one. 20% of the people said that they wouldn’t bother to buy a gift again.

You can buy notes or make them. I say get creative. Let your personality come through. Etsy has some great stamps you can buy, pick up an ink pad in a fun color, a plain white card and you’re set. If creativity isn’t your thing, head to Target or k-mart. They have great thank you note selections and they aren’t expensive. You aren’t close to a post office? No problem. Ask your parents to order your stamps online from the USPS. They have a great selection + it jazzes up any card.

I know what you are thinking. You don’t have their home addresses. No problem. Pick up the phone. Yes, call them and ask them for their home address. When they ask why, tell them. They will be excited. Just remember to keep it in your address book.  You’ll need it for your birthday gifts!
