We love asking questions and we love the answers from some of our favorite authors. Today we’re talking to Alexandra Monir, author of Suspicion (December 9, 2014; Delacorte Press). Thank you for talking to us today, Alexandra! We’re honored!

GLITTER:  Can you tell us more about Suspicion?

ALEXANDRA: Suspicion was born out of my love of the classic, Gothic mystery novels of Daphne du Maurier and Agatha Christie. Those were some of the first books I fell in love with, and I wanted to give readers a similar experience, but set within our modern time and with younger characters they could relate to. I also adore all things British (Downton Abbey is a particular passion of mine!) so it was really fun getting to “build” a grand English country house and create that upstairs/downstairs environment to set my story in.

GLITTER: What kind of research did you have to do for your book?

ALEXANDRA: The most fun research I did by far was traveling to England with my mom! I got to really soak up British culture, and I studied Blenheim Palace- the estate that I based the fictional Rockford Manor on in my book.

GLITTER: What was it like writing a Gothic suspense novel? Did you read any books for inspiration beforehand?

ALEXANDRA: Suspicion was quite possibly the most fun I’ve ever had on any project! I studied a number of mystery novels and analyzed the pacing, twists and turns, where the clues were dropped, etc, which really helped me understand the techniques involved in writing a true mystery. I can’t wait to write more of them!

GLITTER: If you could be in anyone of Alfred Hitchcock’s old movies, which one would you be in and why?

ALEXANDRA: Ooh, what a great question! Rebecca is my favorite, so I’d naturally want to play the lead in that! 🙂 But I’d also love to take on any of Grace Kelly’s roles in Dial M For Murder, Rear Window, and To Catch a Thief.

GLITTER: Do you have a favorite hero/heroine and why? It doesn’t have to be one you penned, but do you have a favorite?

ALEXANDRA: In YA, it doesn’t get any better than Hermione Granger! In adult literature, I really love the complicated character of Lily Bart in Edith Wharton’s The House of Mirth.

GLITTER: What are you working on right now?

ALEXANDRA: I actually have a first draft of my next YA novel due to Random House in January! It’s called The Girl in the Picture and will be published in spring 2016. So far it’s shaping up to be a thriller wrapped in a unique romance!
