Get in Shape with These Tips!

1)    Go for a walk. I know pretty obvious, right? Walking is still one of the simplest things you can do in order to get and stay fit. Aim for 30-60 minute walks 5 times per week at a pace that challenges you but you’re still able to hold a conversation if you with a walking buddy. Walking is so beneficial because it is both an aerobic exercise as well as a weight bearing exercise – both are ideal for cardiovascular health as well as muscle building. You can walk pretty much anywhere – just make sure it is a safe, well-lit environment that isn’t isolated. The easiest places to go for a walk would be your own neighborhood, a local park or reservation and a treadmill at your local gym.

2)    Consider a jog or a run. Walking may be your thing but jogging and running devotees swear by the high level cardiovascular benefits of running. You can burn more calories in less time than walking when performing this type of exercise but it is also much tougher on your joints. Again, make sure you are jogging or running in safe, well-lit areas. If you’re new to jogging or running or you just want to make sure you’re doing things right, check out Couch to 5K which is a site devoted to helping beginners get onto a running program the right way. 3)    Get cycling. You have lots of options when it comes to cycling – mountain biking, road cycling, stationary bikes at your local gym as well as cycling classes using special stationary bikes that really challenge your cardiovascular and leg strength. Traveling and want to stick to a cycling regimen? Most major cities and vacations spots have bicycle rentals. Do a search online before you travel to see what resources are available in your destination city.

4)    Check out a fitness class. This is something you can do year round, but you might be more motivated to do so when the weather warms up. Classes cover a variety of genres – yoga, Pilates, dance, boxing, martial arts, strength training – you get the idea! The great thing about group exercise is that you can be at any level and work at your own pace (unless the class is clearly listed as being for advanced level participants only). It’s also a great motivator for those who challenge themselves more in a group environment. Classes are also great to combine with other exercises to avoid getting bored and discouraged. Most gyms and studios that offer these types of classes have affordable memberships and even pay per class options.

5)    Workout at home. Lots of options here! You have workout DVDs, tutorials and even classes online, and routines you can do on your own based on what you learned in some of your fitness classes. Working out at home is great since it can be very cost effective (and even free!) and can be useful for the times when the weather is just not going to facilitate that outdoor workout. The downside is that it is for the truly self-motivated but if you have a workout buddy, you can keep each other in check and avoid getting off track.

Now that you have all these wonderful fitness ideas, which one are you going to try first? Have fun, be safe, and get fit!
