REAL PEOPLE: EIC Says It All Starts With a Mood Board

GLITTER MOOD BOARD BTSEver wonder how fashion magazines accomplish such amazing photography and fashion work? Here is an example of a mood board from one of our GLITTER MAGAZINE shoots.  Our EIC, Nikki Fowler, begins with a casting call and selects models from top NYC agencies. She then creatively develops a story for the shoot.  This shoot pulled references from our past ‘beached’ theme shoot, to show the vibrant and youthful energy we like to see on set.

When developing creative direction for a shoot, it’s important to keep the mood and style consistent for your readers. Because we work with teens, we want to display a fresh and youthful image.  We never want to showcase beauty and fashion that is too mature or too tween.  That wouldn’t be fun for you guys! We realize our readers fall somewhere in between!

For this winter shoot, references of winter glam were pulled for our beauty and fashion direction.  This is one just one of the steps in how our team comes together to make the beautiful pages in Glitter Magazine!

We hope you have a better understanding of a mood board! Try making your own at home! Grab some construction paper and some of your favorite magazines, including Glitter! (wink) Cut and paste beauty products you would use, fashion and styling clippings, as well as what type of location you would shoot on! You’re steps away from being a magazine art director!
