Actress, Sammi Hanratty, recently sat down with Glitter Magazine to talk about New York City Fashion Week, her role on the new WGN show, Salem, what character she plays, what brand she’d love to represent at NYFW, and her work with Smile Train. September is her birthday month and she’s donating to Smile Train and encourages others to do the same, which we love. She’ll be visiting India in November. Sammi is so down-to-earth and we loved talking to her. We hope you love her interview as well. Read on to find out more about this talented actress.

GLITTER: Who is your favorite designer at NYFW?

SAMMI: Oh my gosh, so many to choose from!!!  If I HAD to choose I would say Badgley Mishka.  I loved the entire collection!!  I wanted to be every girl walking down the runway.

GLITTER: If you weren’t acting, would you like to be involved in the fashion world in any way?

SAMMI: I think acting is what made me find my passion for fashion. If I wasn’t an actor I don’t think I would have ever really thought much about fashion, I’m a pretty simple jeans and t-shirt kind of girl.  Now that I’ve been exposed to the fashion world, I have a whole new look on things.  I really admire how the designers express themselves through their clothing, like an artist and their canvas. It definitely makes me want to continue to be involved in some aspect.

GLITTER: If you could represent any brand at NYFW, who would it be and why?

SAMMI: I’m kind of new to all of this so it’s really a tough call.  You have huge designers who’ve been in the industry for so long and they are just incredible. It would be an honor to represent them, but I think starting out as a newbie, I would probably choose someone who I’d wear on an everyday basis like Alice & Olivia.  I’m sure I’ll be learning a lot more about fashion by next season so I may have a different answer then.   But that’s the fun in fashion, right??  Always evolving.

GLITTER: Tell us about your work with Smile Train.

SAMMI: Smile Train is an amazing organization that goes into underserved areas and trains the doctors there on how to perform cleft surgery. In the US, children born with cleft don’t leave the hospital until it’s repaired, but in some other countries the child doesn’t get the necessary care. They are considered outcasts.  For only $250 per surgery, they are changing a child’s life.  Who wouldn’t want to help be a part of that?   And…. I’m so excited!!  I’m going to India in November to visit the hospitals in several cities. I’ll be able to be hands-on in assisting surgeries and visiting the children that we’re helping.

GLITTER: September is your birthday month, correct? What are you doing all month long to celebrate it?

SAMMI: I’m actually celebrating my birthday month with Smile Train this year.  My wish is that people donate any amount they can to help bring a smile to a child born with cleft. Any amount helps. On a personal note, I’m also celebrating with my friends by going to Disneyland!!  Then I’m getting together with several other friends over the next few days, so it will be stretched out!!!

GLITTER: Tell us about your new show, Salem. What character do you play, what is the show about, and what network is it on?

SAMMI: I love working on Salem!  It’s WGN’s first original drama and is based on the Salem Witch Trials. It’s set in the 1600s and I love how accurate the clothes and sets are.  It’s like being transported back in time.  The show is about Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery) and John Alden (Shane West) who were lovers as young adults.  He was sent to war and never returned.  She found out shortly thereafter that she was pregnant and made decisions that would affect the rest of her life.  She now has many secrets to hide and when John Alden unexpectedly returns, her life is turned upside down.  I play Dollie, best friend and confidant to Mercy, who is played by the incredibly talented Elise Eberle. I’m so excited to see where season two takes us!!  Go watch the first season so you are caught up!!

GLITTER: What’s your favorite thing about the fall season?

SAMMI: Fall is my favorite season. It’s cuddle season, haha. The leaves are changing and it’s getting cooler and it just makes me so happy to be outside.

GLITTER: Favorite fall trend?

SAMMI: My favorite fall trends are definitely sweaters, scarfs and hats.  This season I’m really drawn to shades of maroon/burgundy.

GLITTER:  What is one thing that you can’t live without?

SAMMI: God! My faith is what makes everything else so much more special.
