Interview with Oh Honey

Glitter Magazine recently sat down with Mitchy and Danielle from Oh Honey, a blend of bright folk and uplifting pop, that helps us remember what summer is all about.  Their song, “Be Okay,” was recently featured on an episode of Fox’s hit show, Glee. Mitchy and Danielle are down-to-earth singers we think everyone will love. Read on to find out their favorite song they’ve written so far, who they’d love to collaborate with, what it was like to tour with James Blunt and American Authors (who happen to be friends of theirs), and where they’ll be touring next.

GLITTER: When was Oh Honey first formed?

MITCHY: Oh Honey started just a little over a year ago. I had taken a break from doing an artist thing to focus on being a songwriter/producer. After a while I got that itch again to try an artist thing and I guess it never really went away. I had always loved the idea of a guy/girl duo like the likes of Johnny Cash and June Carter and I wanted to give that a shot. Danielle kind of fell into my life through a mutual friend of ours; she was the missing piece. I heard her sing and it’s like the rest fell into place. Oh Honey was born.

GLITTER: Can you describe your sound to our readers?

DANIELLE AND MITCHY: We like to think our sound is fun and optimistic while still remaining truthful. If we’re gonna genre-ify, we’d say “folk-pop.”

GLITTER: What was it like to have your single, “Be Okay,” featured on Fox’s Glee?

DANIELLE: Having our song featured on Glee was such a surreal experience. Watching Lea Michele and Naya Rivera perform our song on national television in front of millions of people was the weirdest, but most incredible feeling.  My background is in theatre so I’ve seen the show before and I totally geeked out when we got the e-mail. We definitely watched the scene over and over again.

GLITTER: What has it been like to tour with American Authors and James Blunt?

DANIELLE AND MITCHY: American Authors are hometown friends of ours, so touring with them made for such a fun week! We wish it could’ve been longer– it was awesome to play shows with such talented friends every day. Our tour with James Blunt was a lot of fun as well– the first night of that tour, we played at the Bell Centre, a huge hockey arena in Montreal in front of 7,000 people. It was the kind of stage we had only dreamed of playing our whole lives– when they brought the lights up, all we could see was an ocean of people. It was insane. James Blunt and his band are amazing guys, and we had an awesome month touring Canada and the States.

GLITTER: What has been your favorite song to perform live and why?

DANIELLE: My favorite song to play live is a new one we wrote called “Don’t You Worry Love.” It has really cool back and forth melodies and the chorus is a bunch of layered harmonies– so much fun to sing, and at the end I get to play the tambourine. It’s a song we all can let loose on and have a lot of fun with. Plus the message is really beautiful.

MITCHY: My favorite song to play live is probably “Lonely Neighbor” or “Until You Let Me.” “Lonely Neighbor” is a pretty personal song for me, so I get to leave a little piece of me on stage every night when we play it. “Until You Let Me” is just so full of energy and so much fun to let loose on.

GLITTER: If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be and why?

MITCHY: Bruce Springsteen would probably be my number one to collaborate with; just being able to sit down with him and talk would be amazing. Bruce Springsteen is my first musical memory. My mom is a big fan and turned me onto his music at a young age. Also, Ryan Adams and Butch Walker would be amazing as well. I’m such fans of how all those guys tell stories in their songs. They’re big influences on me, so it would be amazing to be able to work with them.

DANIELLE: My favorite artist is Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. Writing with him would be amazing. Or, you know, Stevie Nick. I grew up listening to Fleetwood Mac with my mom. A girl can dream, right?

GLITTER: When will your debut album be out?

DANIELLE AND MITCHY: Currently we don’t have a date set for our first album, but we were just home for a week in between our tours with James Blunt and The Fray, and we finished up a handful of songs we’re really excited about! We’re always writing, and we can’t wait to share our new songs with the world.  In the meantime, we have a four-song EP out on iTunes called With Love, so be sure to check it out!

GLITTER: What’s your favorite song you wrote on your debut album?

DANIELLE AND MITCHY: We both love “Lonely Neighbor.” It’s a song we think everyone can relate to at some point– wanting to be with someone so badly, but not being able to. We try to stay really personal and honest with the songs while still remaining optimistic, and all four on the EP hold a special place in our hearts.

GLITTER: What are you looking forward to this summer?

DANIELLE AND MITCHY: We are on tour for all of June and July with The Fray. The tour just started and our next show is at Red Rocks in Denver– on top of playing legendary venues across the country, we get to watch The Fray perform every night, who happen to be some of the nicest, most down-to-earth guys we’ve met. We’re also looking forward to playing a show with Ed Sheeran in July, who we’re both huge fans of. It’s gonna be an amazing summer for sure!

GLITTER: Will you be touring soon?

DANIELLE AND MITCHY: Our dates with The Fray are up now on our website–ohhoneymusic.com. Check them out and come hang at a show!

GLITTER: How can fans follow you?

DANIELLE AND MITCHY: Be sure to follow us on Twitter & Instagram: @ohhoneymusic and “like” us on Facebook: Facebook.com/ohhoneymusic.  We love when you guys follow our personal accounts too, @dannibouchard  and @mitchycollins!
