Kelly Rowland is an American powerhouse gearing up to release her third solo studio album. Formerly of
Destiny’s Child, Kelly has been expanding her brand and her sound, making her the songstress at the top of the European and American dance charts. Her most recent album includes collaborations with major hip-hop heavy hitters Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Gucci Mane and Nelly. Her album has a different sound than her previous two albums, with a focus on up-tempo dance records. Kelly has proven to be a musical chameleon and her release will be a instant classic!
Can you tell us what we can expect from your new album?
KELLY ROWLAND: My new album is a reflection of my journey through womanhood and growth. I had fun with sounds and I had fun with music. I also went back to my roots. I didn’t allow anyone to put me in a box.
Do you have any favorite songs off your new album?
KR: I’ve recorded over 50 songs, so my final choices are my absolute favorite and you’ll hear them on the album!
What was your inspiration for this album?
KR: The inspiration for this album was my growth as a woman, as well as other women and their lives. Women were the inspiration.
You are truly an artist who can appeal to POP, R&B and DANCE, how do you accomplish being so versatile?
KR: The versatility in my music comes from not letting anybody put me in a box.
What was your favorite aspect of recording your new album?
KR: My favorite aspects of recording my new album were the creative process, and pushing and challenging myself vocally.
Your style is amazing in the Nelly collaboration video. Nautical top is a major trend for summer. What influences your style day-to-day?
KR: A great pair of heels influences my day-to-day style because I start from the shoe-up.
Where do you like to shop?
KR: I love to shop anywhere and everywhere. There is no one particular place I like to shop.
How has it been working solo, do you enjoy more creative freedom?
KR: As a solo artist, I enjoy being able to express myself personally in the studio.
How is it living in Miami? What do you enjoy most about living there?
KR: I love living in Miami because the weather is amazing all year round!!!!
What advice can you give to other GIRLS WHO ROCK, who are pursuing their dreams?
KR: Never allow anyone to make you feel like you’re not great because you are AMAZING!!! Negative folks don’t count. They are your ammunition to be better.
