INTERVIEW:

How did you get started in acting?

I was almost eight years old when I was watching a kid about my age in a commercial.  I told my mom that I thought I could do that and that I would like to try it. She found me an agent on South Beach, (we lived in Hollywood, Florida at that time, which is right next to Miami), and they started sending me out on auditions for commercials and modeling jobs.

I booked my very first commercial audition, which was for Ovaltine.  I loved it! It was so much fun and I just wanted to keep on doing it.  I became very busy on South Beach and then I told my mom I wanted to try TV and movies.  She knew we would have to go to LA, because there weren’t really any auditions for TV and film in Florida. My family has always supported me, so we all came out to LA for the summer in 2005. We didn’t know it at the time, but we would end up moving there. In a short time I booked a pilot for NBC, a guest starring role on a show called, “The suite Life Of Zack and Cody,” and some other smaller roles.  My big break came when I booked a series regular role on a show called, “Zoey 101,” as “Lola Martinez.” I became part of the Nickelodeon family and developed a great relationship with Dan Schneider, who had created Zoey 101, and many other hit shows for the network.  When the show, (Zoey 101), was almost over, Dan had approached my mom about writing a show for me. I will never forget it.

Where do you love to shop?  What stores?

Vintage stores and little boutiques are my favorites. You know when you go there you’re going to find stuff that’s unique. I also love Urban Outfitters, Rock ‘N” Republic, BCBG and Free People.

How much fun was it to do the GOT MILK campaign?

It was so much fun and such an honor to be chosen for the 15th anniversary campaign. I shot at the new “Milk” studios in LA, and we shot two different looks.  One was for print ads and the other for school posters.

The milk mustache recipe is a secret, but I can tell you it tastes really good…kind of like cheesecake. The milk mustache recipe is mixed by a man named Norman, who has been doing it since the beginning. After you drink the milk and get the mustache, Norman comes in with a paint brush and touches it up, so it’s picture perfect. The whole experience was amazing.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you?

I was on set not too long ago with the whole cast, and I was asked to move to the other side of the room. When I got up from where I was, there was this really loud ripping noise…yes it was my jeans. They split right down the middle. Everyone, including myself cracked up.

How do you feel about working with the cast of Victorious?

We have an amazing cast. They’re all very talented in their own way. We have a lot of fun on set in between scenes. There’s a lot of singing and playing instruments, because most of us are very musical.

Avan Jogia, (who plays Beck), and I were very close friends before the show and it’s very cool that he ended up on my show. It’s nice to have someone you’re so close to, to hang with everyday at work.

What do you like better, singing or acting?

I get asked this a lot, and I can’t choose. I am equally passionate about both.  I have been doing both since I was very young.  When you are in a scene, and you’re in the zone it’s great.

When you create a song from the beginning that you love, whether it’s by yourself or a collaboration, it’s also an amazing feeling. Hopefully I can continue to do both.

Why did you get involved with GIRL UP?

I had been looking for a charity to be involved in, and this came my way. The more I learned about girls just like me, that didn’t have some of the basic human rights we take for granted, I knew that I wanted to be a voice for them. They deserve to have an education, clean drinking water, to have access to healthcare and just be counted. Many of them don’t even have a birth certificate. They have hopes and dreams just like we do, and they deserve to have a chance.

What can teens do to help the GIRL UP cause?

Just by spreading the word and bringing awareness to the situation will start to help.  They can go to Girlup.org and donate five dollars or more and that can help buy school supplies for a girl’s education, keep them healthy and give them safety from violence.  It’s amazing but we all have the ability to bring hope to a girl who doesn’t have the opportunities that we do and change her life.

Have you gotten to travel to any great places? If so what were your favorite?

I went to London this summer for the first time and it was amazing. I went with my mom, my close friend Avan and his mom. We were there for 17 days and really got a feel for it.  We went to Paris for a day, and it was really beautiful, but it was too short a visit. I would love to go to Paris again and spend more time there. The scenery was breathtaking.

I have also fallen in love with Vancouver. I’ve filmed two movies there and really got to know the city very well. It’s one of the most beautiful and cleanest cities I’ve ever seen.

What advice can you give to teens wanting to act or sing?

I would say to make sure that it’s something that you’re passionate about. I’ve had friends that thought they wanted to do this, and then when they started getting into it, realized it wasn’t for them. I would suggest taking acting classes first or joining a theater group before you invest in headshots.

I know it looks very glamorous from the outside, but it’s a lot of hard work and long hours. With that being said though, if you love it, you don’t mind the long hours and sacrifices you make along the way. If you’re passionate about either music or acting, then it’s all about honing the craft and immersing yourself in it. What I mean by that is, if you’re going to go for it, then go for it. Surround yourself with people who live and breathe it, and practice, practice, practice.
