PHOTOGRAPHER LUCIA HOLM

Eclectic, innovative and creative are three words to describe up and coming photographer Lucia Holms. Her work is innovative, intriguing and simply, well, she rocks! If you have had the privilege of checking out her work at her myspace or flicker account, you will see that this young talent is full throttle in the talent gauge. Born in New Jersey, this beach girl grew up from Italian, Swedish, German and Irish descent. She started out in fine arts at the esteemed Rhode Island school of Design (RISD) for her undergraduate work and then went on to the New york Academy of Art in Tribeca Ny, where she got her Masters in 2006.

She realized she had a strong interest in photography as a hobby and her interest grew more and more. Lucia realized she could apply her classical art training to photography as well.

She currently shoots with a Canon Digital Rebel XTI, and 30D with various lenses. Her passion in life is art, she still loves to draw and paint, photography, music, and definitely culture and fashion from past decades such as the 20’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. She admits to an extreme obsession with Marilyn Monroe. You can definitely see the influence in her work specifically with her self portraits.

Lucia’s advice to anyone looking to become a photographer would be to pick up a cheap camera and just start shooting! The more you experiment , the more you will learn she states. She continues, Worry about the expensive stuff later!”

Her down time is spent going to shows (music) , dance parties if she is lucky to catch one and drawing. her TV is usually set to bravo, MTV or VHI if she wants a little background noise while she is working, and loves to catch a Law and Order repeat marathon.

What moves Lucia to succeed is the knowledge that she can really make a career out of doing what she really truly loves. She has always wanted to pursue a career in the arts somehow, but seeing that it can be a cut throat industry, she states talent is involved yes, but it takes a bit of luck as well, timing and a little elbow rubbing with the right people, which she has been lucky enough to have on her side.

She admits to sometimes not always moving as fast as she would like and suffering from a pinch of procrastination. So every now and then she gives herself a strong mental push to keep going. She states that everything around her is inspiring, so if she is in a rut, it doesn’t usually last long.

You can usually catch her munching on chips and dips and definitely not one for the 9-5 corporate type of job. She simply cannot do it and prefers the life of the carefree artist. Her other ventures will include eventually creating a clothing site for herself, and she has ideas on the drawing table. She states she will soon have her sewing machine fired up. You never know, we may be grabbing the racks of LUCIA HOLMS DESIGNS from LA to New York in the years to come! If her clothing is anything like her photography, it is sure to be a hit with the fashionistas.

Her skills range from Photoshop, CS2 and CS3 all the latest required software to help one with photo work. She also is a fan of Illustrator another graphic design must have program. She has tip toed through Dreamweaver and Flash by macromedia and hopes to master those dynamic programs soon!

Most of the photographers that have been an inspiration to Lucia can be found at her FLICKER site. Just browse through her contacts list and see who is on her top list of creative people and influences. Bert Stern, Barry Lategan, Lewis Carroll (an old school inspiration to her) all have served as inspiration in her photography.

Her thoughts on women in the industry? She definitely thinks women have been gaining and maintaining momentum in the arts for several decades now, but she doesn’t really see the
industry separated by gender.
